Goji Berry and Curcumin: Protecting your Immune System
Amazing Nutrients Demonstrate Ability to Naturally Boost your Immune System
Your immune system is your body’s defense system, blocking viruses and bacteria from entering and fighting them off if they make their way inside. But it relies on your decisions to protect it – without the right vitamins and minerals it cannot operate as effectively as it needs to, just like every other system and individual organ in your body.
So what can you take to protect the system that’s meant to protect you? Two nutrients - an antioxidant and a dense herb - are a great place to start.
Common in traditional Chinese medicine, goji berry is rife with antioxidants and flavonoids, both of which help to protect the immune system from damage caused by free radicals. It’s also rich in vitamin C, a well-known immune system booster – in fact, it has 500-times more vitamin C than an orange. But the benefits don’t stop there: Studies have found that goji berry increases white blood cell counts and overall immune system activity. When taken regularly, people become sick less often and stay sick for a lesser amount of time than they would without it.
Derived from turmeric, curcumin was found to triple the expression of a gene that encodes a protein responsible for combatting bacteria, viruses and fungi, even if the immune system has never encountered those exact “invaders” before. The study, conducted at Oregon State University, ultimately found that regularly taking curcumin, which isn’t readily available in the standard western diet, can improve overall immune system function. As an added benefit, it’s also rich in antioxidants.
Taking these two supplements together, especially when combined with other immune system friendly vitamins and minerals as found in products made by Debbie Novick, D.C., is a great way to give back to the part of your body responsible for keeping you healthy, alert and thriving.
